Brush Your Teeth!

One of the health GLCE's is to demonstrate proper tooth brushing technique's. To do this it is important to learn about all the different diseases and bacteria that can cause tooth decay. To help demonstrate this graph, it would be prudent to bring in tooth brushes and paste for the students to practice this technique.

Testing

Are tests the best way to measure learning?

I think that testing is beneficial in some circumstances; however, I do not think it is the only or the best way to measure a student's competency. I know that from my own experience, I am not the best tester I would much rather do an oral presentation on what I've learned than study for hours to try and guess what the teacher wants me to know. I think that there should be multiple different options for students to regurgitate the material they have learned. Testing can be either extremely easy or extremely hard depending on the teacher. This is part of the problem of testing, some teachers are clear about what will be on the test while others are vague. It would be better for students to let the teacher know what they have learned rather try to figure out what the teacher wanted them to learn. Testing, in some instances, can be beneficial. Some students do very well at taking tests. However, just because some students do well at testing does not mean that we should subject every student to learn this way.

Learning Style 3

My 3rd learning strategy is a hamburger diagram. This helps students when learning how to write an essay. It give them a visual outline.

Learning Style Reflection

Does it ring true in my everyday life?

After reading my test results I was shocked at how accurate they were. They also brought up some ideas that I had never thought about. For example I scored higher on the sensory style of learning which makes complete sense now. When I was in a class that was completely abstract thought I had a hard time connecting it to real world situations and I struggled in that class. However as soon as I asked the professor to give me examples of those abstract ideas I caught on much quicker.

How might this affect my teaching?

Knowing this may cause me to only teach in those specific learning styles because it makes sense to me I may think that it makes sense to all my students.

What will I have to do to counteract this affect?

Knowing what kind of learning styles I have helps me realize that everybody learns differently. I need to keep this in mind so that I don't just stick to one style of teaching because there may be some students who get it but I need to be considerate of all of my students.

How can I ensure I will teach to those students UNLIKE me?

To make sure I help students who are UNLIKE me I need to be aware of all learning styles. If I am able to apply all different kinds of learning styles all my students are bound to understand the lesson in one way or another.
